로/으로
로/으로 are the endings used to indicate the means or method by which something is done.
Basic Usage
Means or Method
- Use 로/으로 to describe the tool, language, or method used to perform an action.
- Example:
- 연필로 글을 썼어요. (I wrote a letter with a pencil.)
- 한국어로 말해 주세요. (Please speak in Korean.)
Direction or Destination
- You can use it to indicate the direction toward which an action is oriented.
- Example:
- 집으로 가요. (I’m going toward home.)
- 이 길로 가세요. (Go along this road.)
Selection or Choice
- You can use it to indicate selection among several options.
- Example:
- 반찬으로 김치를 먹었어요. (I ate kimchi as a side dish.)
- 간식으로 과자를 먹었어요. (I had cookies as a snack.)
Reason or Cause
- Sometimes it can express the reason or cause of an action.
- Example:
- 감기로 학교에 못 갔어요. (I couldn’t go to school because of a cold.)
Use 로/으로 in this way when the cause is a contributing factor, related to conditions, states, or when the cause is implied rather than explicit. But iff the cause is a direct, clear cause-effect relationship, use 때문에.
When to use 로vs 으로
- Use
로when the preceding word ends in a vowel or the consonantㄹ. - Use
으로when the preceding word ends in any consonant other thanㄹ.
